Illustration & Visual Storytelling
Paw Tracks Here and Abroad is a story-driven book brought to life through a collaborative process between author and illustrator. Working directly with the author, I translated the written stories into a visual language that could deepen the narrative, capture the spirit of the characters, and invite readers further into each scene.
The Challenge
The goal was to create illustrations that complemented the author's writing without simply depicting it literally. Each image needed to feel like part of the story by adding emotion, personality, atmosphere, and visual details that could give the reader another way to experience the narrative.
Because the stories move between different settings and experiences, the illustrations also needed to support a sense of place and give each moment its own visual identity while maintaining a cohesive style throughout the book.
My Approach
I worked closely with the author throughout the illustration process, using the writing as the foundation for developing the visual storytelling.
I focused on identifying the moments within each story that could benefit most from a visual interpretation. That meant capturing the character's personality, emphasizing a particular interaction, or establishing the feeling of a location.
Rather than treating the illustrations as separate images, I approached them as extensions of the narrative. Composition, character expression, environment, and small visual details were used to reinforce the tone of the writing and give readers additional context to discover.
The collaborative process with the author was an important part of shaping the work. Through discussion and iteration, we were able to balance the author's vision with my perspective as an illustrator, creating images that felt authentic to the stories while establishing a cohesive visual world.
Visual Storytelling
One of the most rewarding aspects of the project was finding ways for the illustrations to communicate beyond the words on the page.
The characters became an opportunity to convey personality and emotion through gesture, expression, and interaction. Environments helped establish where the stories were taking place and gave the reader a stronger sense of journey. Details within each illustration were intentionally considered to encourage readers to pause, look closer, and engage with the story visually.
The result is a collection of illustrations designed not only to accompany the text, but to participate in the storytelling itself.
THE RESULT
Through close collaboration with the author, I developed a cohesive body of illustrations that brings Paw Tracks Here and Abroad into a visual world.
The project allowed me to explore the relationship between written and visual storytelling and to create illustrations that add another layer of emotion, character, and place to the author's words.
